Based on our organizational theme, FT+3, we focus on sustainable farming practices by conserving the natural resources and habitat around the farmland. However, we have to ensure fair revenue to our farmer members by enhancing the quality and productivity of our farm produce. Hence, to leverage its potential resources the organization is converting our farm waste into certified organic manure by adopting a standard composting procedure.
Organic farming has as its main basis, the health of the soil. Natural resources in the farm environment are used to produce stable humus instead of adding synthetic, chemical fertilizers that destroy the bacterial and microbial life in the soil. However, our farmers are mulching their farm waste / green waste directly into the crops. This method is not sufficient to deliver all the nutrients in the biomass to the crops and there are no significant changes reflected in the crops. Here is where the importance of a proper composting process for farm waste management comes in.
Farmers themselves are able to compost their farm waste into organic manure through composting to a certain extent. However, the challenges faced by small holder farmers are many;
Thus we decided to gather the farm waste and additional nearby biomass to an ideal location and develop the production facility. Accordingly, FTAK constructed a yard at the central office campus with a provision for shredding the waste and composting through the aerobic heap method. Further we have installed a mixing and sieving unit to enhance the quality of manure by enriching with microbial and nutrients solubilizing bacteria. So came into being the Fair Green Enriched Organic Manure. Currently, it is not being sold in the market but only distributed amongst farmer members to increase soil health and productivity.
